The first step in learning energy healing is creating good visualizations.

Hold on. Why do you have to create them? Why can’t I just give you good visualizations?

This post will explain why, when, and how to update your visualizations.

Why Good visualizations must be personalized

Visualizations are a way to communicate your intent to your own unconscious mind. But here’s the thing: Energy feels different to different people. It might feel like tingling to you, heat to your friend, and pressure to someone else.

Those sensations are the language your unconscious uses to represent energy. (Of course, tingling, heat, and pressure are created by many non-energy causes, as well.)

To create energy, it’s important to speak the same language as your unconscious. But when a teacher gives you a visualization, it’s in the language of their unconscious. That’s the problem.

The solution is to build a visualization for yourself, that speaks the language of your unconscious.

Why update your visualizations

Remember that post on creating energy visualizations? I had you start by remembering how energy feels for you.

But what if that feeling you are remembering isn’t really how energy feels to you? What if energy actually feels like something else? Then you would need to update your visualizations, to align them to how energy actually feels.

There are a few ways this can happen. The simplest is, if you haven’t felt energy before, I told you to guess. Not surprisingly, you might not have guessed right.

But there’s a subtler, more widespread reason. you probably had people tell you how energy feels. Maybe a friend, maybe a teacher, maybe a book or a website. Most people I know have heard that energy feels like tingling.

If you expect to feel tingling in your first energy class, you probably will. But here’s the problem: Energy might not feel like tingling to you. Those sensations might have just been because you expected to feel tingling.

As we play energy games, many of my students discover that energy doesn’t feel the way they expected it to.

At some point, you will probably discover that as well. And when you do, it’s time to update your visualizations.

When to update your visualizations

After getting data.

Here’s the longer answer:

When you play an energy game as the sender, and most of your partners can’t feel your energy, that’s a good indication that your visualization is not producing energy. That means you’ll probably want to update it.

When you play an energy game as the receiver, you can learn how energy really feels to you. Whenever you guess the hand wrong, don’t just go on to the next round. Pause. Have your sender continue sending the energy. Tune in to any subtle sensations that you ignored. Real energy often feels subtle and easy to miss, so really tune in to subtle sensations. These become your new hypothesis to test.

Then do some more rounds of the game. Pay attention to those subtle sensations when you’re trying to guess the hand. See which sensations actually lead you to the correct hand. That will tell you how energy actually feels to you.

Most people discover that energy feels quite a bit different than they expected. And after making that discovery is the time to update your visualizations.

How to update your visualizations

The same way you made your visualizations in the first place: Think about how energy feels, and come up with a visual that represents that to you.

My main advice here is to discard your first visualization. This can be hard if it’s something you’ve used for a while, something taught to you by another teacher. It could be tempting to tweak that visualization, rather than coming up with a whole new one.

But now you have data. Trust the data. Make a visualization that is tailored to how energy actually feels to you, even if that’s completely different from your old visualization.

Well, I decided to start playing the first energy game with my friends, but neither of them nor I haven’t felt energy. Is there a solution to this dilemma?

Hi Sterling, try some different visualizations, see what works for you. This first step can be tricky, since you don’t know how to visualize energy until you feel it, so the best approach is to try lots of things and see what feels right to you. Try visualizations yourself, see what creates sensations, and then try that one along with a few others with friends. Good job getting going, just playing the energy game is a big first step!

Okay, thanks, but when I tried a visualization of representing my energy’s sensation as pressure and tried to move it around, it doesn’t seem to have any change of feeling in my body. Is there something I missed or did wrong? If so, please tell me what I need to do to improve.

Hi Sterling, it sounds like that visualization isn’t the right one for you. Try some others and see what works. Enjoy exploring it all!

Well, I tried mediation, as suggested in your blog of why the best visualization is the one created, and I felt a bit of pressure in my body. I don’t know if I did the tuning mediation right. What is it I’m missing?

If you feel energy as pressure, then that sounds like a success. Keep at it and let me know how it goes. Good luck!
